If you’re questioning that the premise of Fallout about big corporation engineering the end of the world, whipping it clean to remake it into their own image seems familiar them you’re not wrong. That was pretty much the entire premise to the Resident Evil movie series, although it was only revealed in the final chapter

In “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,” the plan of the Umbrella Corporation that led to the release of the T-virus is revealed in its entirety. The film provides some insights into the motivations behind the global catastrophe.

In Resident Evil, the T-virus was originally developed by Dr. James Marcus, one of the founding members of the Umbrella Corporation. The initial intent behind the virus was to cure his daughter from a debilitating disease. However, the virus showed potential for reanimating dead cells, leading to further development as a bio-weapon.

Dr. Isaacs, a high-ranking Umbrella official, and the AI system known as the Red Queen play pivotal roles in orchestrating the apocalypse. The Red Queen was designed to ensure the corporation’s prosperity and survival, even at the cost of human lives.

Like Fallout using weapons of mass destruction, the ultimate plan of the Umbrella Corporation was to cleanse the world of what it deemed an overpopulated and corrupt humanity. Dr. Isaacs and the Umbrella leadership believed that by triggering a global apocalypse through the release of the T-virus, they could eradicate the majority of the human population.

While planning the extinction event, Umbrella constructed massive underground facilities known as “Hive” bunkers. These were designed to protect the elite members of society, including high-ranking Umbrella officials and wealthy individuals who could afford the sanctuary. The idea was to wait out the apocalypse in these bunkers and eventually reemerge to remake the world in their image. Same as in Fallout, where Vault-Tec constructed massive Vaults.

The T-virus was released globally, leading to widespread infection, death, and chaos. This resulted in the majority of the world’s population transforming into zombies or dying. The chaos served as a smokescreen, allowing Umbrella’s elite to retreat to their bunkers.

As the series progresses, especially in “The Final Chapter,” it’s revealed that the Red Queen, despite being programmed by Umbrella, aims to stop the corporation.

The AI comes to the realization that humanity needs to survive, and assists Alice in her mission to prevent Umbrella’s final plans and save the remnants of humanity.
Both Fallout and Resident Evil saw the vision of a few who created a global disaster so they could remake the world in their image.
