MOVIE, TRAILERS

The Thunderbolts Trailer Teases Sentry—But Is The Void Lurking Too?

The Thunderbolts Trailer Teases Sentry—But Is The Void Lurking Too?

Marvel has just dropped the first trailer for The Thunderbolts, and it looks like things are about to get darker in the MCU. With a release date set for May 2, 2025, this movie is already shaping up to be Marvel’s answer to DC’s Suicide Squad—but with that signature MCU twist, of course. So, what should we expect from this team of antiheroes?

If you thought The Avengers had a complicated roster, wait until you meet the Thunderbolts. This group is essentially a collection of reformed villains and misfits working for the U.S. government. It’s not all sunshine and patriotism, though. These characters have a lot of baggage, and the trailer hints that The Thunderbolts will explore their inner turmoil, making it much darker than your typical superhero movie.

The trailer gives off some serious moody vibes. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) starts things off by reflecting on an emptiness inside her. “There’s something wrong with me… an emptiness… I’m just drifting,” she says, setting the tone for the introspective and gritty ride ahead. This emotional angle promises to dive deeper into the flawed nature of these characters, giving us more of a psychological thriller than a standard punch-fest.

With a cast of characters like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), there’s definitely a Suicide Squad-esque feel to the movie. Each of these characters comes with their own troubled past. But unlike DC’s more chaotic squad, the Thunderbolts have a clear mission from the government.

We can also expect plenty of explosive action, as the trailer teases some intense sequences. These aren’t your typical heroes. These are complicated characters who’ve done some bad things, and now they’re trying to find redemption—if they can.

But that doesn’t mean the team is lacking leadership. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine pulling the strings, the team is in complicated hands.

One of the most exciting parts of the Thunderbolts trailer is the appearance of Sentry, played by Lewis Pullman. For those not familiar, Sentry is a powerhouse in the Marvel Comics universe—basically, imagine Superman but with even more emotional baggage and a dark alter-ego called “The Void.” The trailer doesn’t give much away about his role, but it definitely raises some big questions about how the MCU will handle a character with the power of a million exploding suns.

In the comics, Sentry’s mental instability and overwhelming power make him a ticking time bomb. This makes it hard to predict how Marvel will use him in The Thunderbolts. Is he going to be a full-fledged member of the team, or are they setting him up as the ultimate antagonist for the squad to face?

The trailer doesn’t show Sentry fighting alongside the rest of the team, which could mean Marvel is saving him as the wild card. Given the Thunderbolts’ history of being a team of antiheroes and misfits, throwing someone like Sentry into the mix could either unify them or utterly tear them apart.

One of the most exciting—and terrifying—possibilities is the appearance of The Void, Sentry’s dark alter-ego. The Void is the manifestation of all of Sentry’s worst fears and emotional instability, and if he shows up, it could spell serious trouble not just for the Thunderbolts but for the MCU at large. If Marvel chooses to introduce The Void in this movie, it could lead to one of the most intense internal and external conflicts we’ve seen in the MCU.

Imagine a scenario where the Thunderbolts have to deal not only with their usual governmental missions and personal demons but also with an unstable teammate who could potentially destroy the planet. If The Void emerges, we might even see the Thunderbolts turning against Sentry to stop him before he becomes a threat to everyone.

Can the Thunderbolts handle Sentry? Let’s be real—how can a team of mostly enhanced humans and government-trained operatives stand up to someone with the power of a million suns? Even with characters like Bucky Barnes and U.S. Agent, the Thunderbolts are seriously outmatched if Sentry decides to turn on them.

One theory floating around is that Sentry starts as part of the team, but his instability—perhaps fueled by The Void—causes him to break away, setting him up as a future antagonist for the Thunderbolts or even the larger MCU. Whether they can “fair” against him (or more likely, survive him) is one of the big mysteries until the movie’s release.
