Why You Should be Watching Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy

Why You Should be Watching Season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is just a kids’ show, right? Well, think again. If you’re not tuning in to Season 2, you’re seriously missing out on some quality Star Trek content. Trust me, this series is packed with Easter eggs and nods to the broader Star Trek universe, making it a decent watch for fans of all ages.

A treasure trove of easter eggs

Season 2 is basically an homage to everything we love about Star Trek. Without giving away any spoilers, here are just a few of the Easter eggs that will make your inner Trekkie squeal with joy:

Comparing the Prodigy crew with the Lower Decks crew

One of the fun aspects of Season 2 is how it draws comparisons between the Prodigy crew and the crew from Star Trek: Lower Decks. Both crews are made up of young, somewhat inexperienced members, but their journeys and challenges offer unique perspectives on what it means to be part of Starfleet.

Callbacks

Remember the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Parallels” from Season 7? In that episode, Lieutenant Worf finds himself jumping between different quantum realities after a Bat’leth tournament. Prodigy tips its hat to this episode with its own time-travel troubles. The concept of quantum flux and timelines overlapping is revisited, making it a nostalgic nod to long-time fans.

Cameos

Apart from established characters from across the Star Trek universe showing up, a certain time traveler appears halfway into the season, and this alone is a treasure chest of Easter eggs. For instance, there are references to the Mycelial Plane, a clear nod to Star Trek: Discovery. But what really stands out is their mention of the Narada Incursion. For those who need a refresher, the Narada Incursion is a major plot point in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek film, which creates the Kelvin timeline. The time travelers mention of this event essentially confirms that the Kelvin timeline is canon within the broader Star Trek universe.

New threats and entities

While the Easter eggs are a great callback, tying the overall multiverse together, Prodigy doesn’t just rely on nostalgia. The series introduces new threats and entities, like cosmic scavengers that feed on dying timelines. This adds new content to the Star Trek canon, ensuring that the show isn’t just rehashing old material.

If you’re skipping Star Trek: Prodigy because you think it’s just for kids, you’re doing yourself a disservice. This series is delivering some darn good Star Trek content that’s loaded with references, clever callbacks, and new adventures. Season 2 of Prodigy is not to be missed.
