The dark side has a dress code
Villains in Star Wars almost always wear capes or cloaks, but so do the good guys. Nonetheless, the villains by far wear them better. Those flowing pieces of fabric just give off an aura of badassery, as if the villain is married to evil. They know that they’re the bad guys, and everyone should also know. Both Jedi and Sith wear cloaks. It adds an air of mystery more than any other type of clothing. But if someone is wearing a cape in Star Wars, it’s almost certain that they’re the ultimate villain.
We’re first introduced to cloaks and capes in A New Hope. The true master of the cape entered with one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history, Darth Vader. Vader set the tone for the Star Wars universe, with every earlier villain wearing either a cape or a cloak.
As time passed, we saw villains like Darth Sidious, Count Dooku, and Kylo Ren all donning cloaks and capes. This solidified the idea that a cloak or cape is necessary apparel for anyone looking to become a top-tier villain.
One reason for the prevalence of cloaks and capes among Star Wars villains is the symbolic power they represent. Wearing a cloak or cape signifies power and authority, something that the dark side of the Force craves. The Sith are known for their desire for domination and control. Wearing a cape or cloak adds to their overall image of strength and intimidation.
In addition to the symbolism, cloaks and capes also add a touch of theatricality to a villain’s persona. A flowing cape or billowing cloak can create an ominous atmosphere, making the villain seem more threatening and dangerous.
The Sith and other villains in Star Wars use their cloaks and capes as a fashion statement, to intimidate and to remind others of their status as villains.
Of course, the use of these clothes in Star Wars is not exclusive to villains. The Jedi wear cloaks layered over robes—a bit pretentious, if you ask me.
However, the difference is that for Jedi, wearing them is designed to be simple and functional, reflecting the Jedi philosophy of humility and detachment from materialism.
A cloak is not a necessity for their heroism. Yet, like the villains, it adds an air of mystery.
The use of cloaks, robes, and capes in Star Wars has become iconic. Cloaks and robes add an air of mystery and symbolism for the Jedi, while cloaks and capes add an aura of badassery to a villain’s persona, making them more imposing and intimidating. While it may not be a requirement for good or evil, it has certainly become a staple of the Star Wars villain’s wardrobe.
